"Oh Santa Luzia"

A little quiet village with Octopus(!) fisherman
and much more
With a long beach and the most nice boulevard of Portugal in the middle of the
Ria Formosa.
Santa Luzia is a fishing village near
Tavira and a centre of octopus fishing, as can
be seen from the heaps of numbered earthenware pots on the quayside.
When placed on the sandy seabed, inquisitive octopuses can't resist crawling into them, but
can't find their way out.
Every late morning the fisherboats come back to the landing stage
and bring their octopuses to the Santa Luzia stock market.
A fascinating and unique vieuw ....
Even also the octopus
art1 and art2 !!
The fisherboats have a crew of 3 or 5 man, most are man from Santa Luzia. The older men stay on shore
and observe everyting quite well because its possible their leased boat!
The level of the "mares" is of course important for Santa Luzia.
What most visitors to the region of Santa Luzia find irresistable is the lovely palmboulevard
and the long sandy beach on the outer edge of the sand bar known as
Ilha de Tavira, which can be conveniently reached during the high season by a little ferryboat
at the boulevard and always with a miniature railway starting near the
Pedras d'el Rei holiday development (1 km).
At the boulevard are surprising many (fish)restaurants and terrasses. At saturday and sure at
sunday its very difficult to get a table because a lot of local families visit these popular boulevardrestaurants.

Start with conquilhas or shrimps and than delicious crawfish, our famous "cataplana" or maybe our "carapau"?
Octopus of course the local delicacy.

Remarkable is the Dutch restaurant "Canto Azul". (281381391),
leading by "Gert and Leonie". Its the best place for an international/European high quality
diner in a perfect atmosphere and nice sea view!
